President Donald Trump has halted planned military strikes against Iran while regional governments work toward an agreement intended to reduce hostilities.
CNN reported on Sunday that the developing proposal could address several major points, including reopening the Strait of Hormuz, limiting Iran’s nuclear activities, and preventing further military attacks. Iran had not publicly confirmed the terms at the time of the announcement.
The decision follows a period of rising tension and warnings that the United States could launch additional strikes on Iranian targets. Governments across the Middle East have pushed for restraint, concerned that further fighting could threaten military installations, energy facilities, commercial shipping, and civilian communities throughout the region.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a central part of the discussions because a significant share of the world’s oil supply passes through the waterway. Any prolonged disruption can affect fuel prices and international trade.
